The dark color of this flower is black from a distance but a rich, purplish burgandy up close. These beautiful towers of flowers for bees and butterflies make an excellent backdrop for pink, red, yellow or white flowers. Performing best with ample moisture, they are fairly drought tolerant. Hollyhock flowers are edible, but bland and make a lovely garnish to salads or desserts and the flower's central disk can be bitter.
