Jonathan Green Black Beauty Grass Seed

Jonathan Green's Black Beauty Grass Seed formulas are the perfect substitute for our Co-Op blends.

The Co-Op’s grass seed varieties you know and love are unfortunately unavailable this year. Drought in the northwest destroyed most of the harvest, leaving us searching for the perfect substitute. See our previous blog, Where Did All The Grass Seed Go, for more information about how challenging it has been to find quality grass seed this year. Fortunately, Jonathan Green Grass Seed is in stock and works wonders on your lawn.

Black Beauty Original

In lieu of Essex No. 2, try Jonathan Green’s Black Beauty Original grass seed for a drought-tolerant, hardy grass seed, formulated for our cool-season climate. We highly recommend it for both starting new areas and reseeding, since its mix of tall fescues create deep roots for successful turf for years to come.

Jonathan Green’s grass varieties have been bred for cold tolerance, drought tolerance, and a naturally dark and rich green color. It’s perfect for those who wish to recover their lawn, or are looking to start off a new area strong. It germinates in 10-14 days.

Jonathan Green’s Black Beauty Original comes in 5 lb and 25 lb bags.

The smaller 5 lb bag seeds up to 1,500 sq. ft. for overseeding, and seeds up to 750 sq. ft. for new lawns.

Black Beauty Sun & Shade

For people who’ve sworn by our Essex Shady Mix, Jonathan Green has a solution for you, as well. Black Beauty Sun & Shade is a great pick for areas with partial shade, but can handle full sun just fine. This makes it exceptionally versatile and a good choice for improving bare patches on your lawn. It germinates in 7-14 days.

Jonathan Green’s Black Beauty Sun & Shade mix is sold by us in 3 lb and 25 lb bags.

The smaller 3 lb bag seeds up to 2,250 sq. ft. for overseeding, and seeds up to 1,125 sq. ft for new lawns.

The 25 lb bag seeds up to 18,750 sq. ft. for overseeding, and 9,375 sq.ft. for new lawns.
